Rob MacArthur, Candidate for Councillor in the Hamilton Township Municipal Election

I've called Hamilton Township home for the past 10 years, and I've come to appreciate what makes this municipality so distinctive.

Hamilton Township isn't just one kind of community. We're farmers and rural residents, families living in our hamlets and neighbourhoods, waterfront residents, seasonal residents, seniors, young families and local businesses.

We don't always have the same concerns — and I don't think municipal government should assume that we do.

I'm running for Hamilton Township Councillor because I believe my experience in municipal government, management, finance, accounting, technology and community service can contribute to the Council table.

Just as importantly, I'm running because I believe residents deserve representatives who listen, ask questions, understand the facts and are accountable for the decisions they make.

EXPERIENCE I CAN BRING TO COUNCIL.

My career has given me experience in both the public and private sectors, including municipal government.

MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

I spent seven years as Manager of Computer Systems with the Town of Ajax.

That experience gave me firsthand knowledge of how municipal government operates from inside the organization — including working with departments, budgets, technology, projects, staff and the systems required to deliver municipal services.

MANAGEMENT & ORGANIZATIONAL EXPERIENCE

I also spent seven years as Corporate Systems Manager with the Ontario Cancer Foundation, working within a large and complex public-service organization.

My career has also included management experience with Rogers Communications, as well as being self-employed.

These roles taught me something that applies equally well to municipal government:

Good decisions require good information, careful planning and accountability for results.

FINANCE & ACCOUNTING

Today, I work as an Accounting Specialist with Alderville First Nation.

My broader background includes accounting, finance, budgeting and financial systems.

Municipal councils make decisions involving millions of taxpayer dollars. I believe Councillors should be prepared to ask questions about costs, understand the financial implications of decisions and ensure residents receive value for the money being spent.

TECHNOLOGY, PROJECTS & COMMUNICATION

Municipal government is increasingly dependent upon technology, data and effective project management.

My professional background includes:

Accounting & Finance • Computer & Technology Systems • Project Management • Organizational Management • Public Relations • Social Media • Investigation & Research

I also have experience as a private investigator, which reinforced the importance of gathering information, verifying facts and asking questions before reaching conclusions.

I believe those skills can be valuable at the Council table.

COMMUNITY HAS ALWAYS MATTERED TO ME

My involvement in community organizations began long before I considered running for municipal office.

Over the years, I've served as an executive member with minor hockey, baseball and soccer organizations, served on the Town of Ajax Recreation Advisory Committee, and have been involved with both Rotary and the Royal Canadian Legion.

I am a past President of the Rotary Club of Ajax and have served in executive roles with the Royal Canadian Legion.

I'm also a member of the Ontario Corps.

These experiences have allowed me to work with volunteers, families, community organizations and people with very different backgrounds and points of view.

They've also reinforced my belief that strong communities aren't created by government alone.

They're created by people who are willing to participate.

WHY I'M RUNNING

I'm not running because I believe I have all the answers.

And I'm not interested in making promises simply because they sound good during an election campaign.

I'm running because I believe Hamilton Township can benefit from another voice at the Council table that places a strong emphasis on:

Accountability.

Residents deserve to know what their municipality is doing with their money and whether programs and projects are producing the expected results.

Transparency.

Important municipal decisions should be explained clearly so residents can understand what is being proposed, why it's being proposed and what it will cost.

Financial Responsibility.

Property taxes and municipal fees ultimately come from residents' pockets. Every dollar should be treated accordingly.

Listening.

Council needs to understand that the priorities of someone operating a farm may be very different from those of someone living in a hamlet, along a rural road or on Rice Lake.

Community Safety.

Speeding, road safety, emergency preparedness and other community-safety concerns deserve serious attention.

Responsible Growth.

Hamilton Township will continue to change. Growth needs to be managed responsibly while respecting the rural, agricultural, residential and waterfront character that makes the Township special.

WHY COUNCILLOR?

I've deliberately chosen to run for Councillor.

I have substantial management and professional experience, but serving on Hamilton Township Council would be a new responsibility.

I believe the right place to begin is at the Council table — learning, contributing, representing residents and demonstrating through my actions what I can bring to municipal government.

Leadership shouldn't begin with seeking a title.

It should begin with earning trust.

LISTEN FIRST. UNDERSTAND THE FACTS. THEN ACT.

Residents have already begun talking to me about property taxes, garbage tag fees, speeding and road safety, property standards, short-term rentals and other concerns.

I'm listening.

That doesn't mean I'm going to automatically agree with every position I'm presented with.

It means I will take concerns seriously, examine the facts, understand which level of government is responsible, look at what we're currently doing and what it costs, and consider whether there is a better approach.

That's the kind of Councillor I want to be.

ISSUES THAT MATTER

ENOUGH ABOUT ME.

I'D LIKE TO HEAR ABOUT YOU.

What do you value most about living in Hamilton Township?

What concerns you?

What should the next Council protect?

What should it change?

And where could your municipal government be doing better?

You don't have to support me to talk with me. You don't even have to agree with me.

I want to hear from Hamilton Township residents.
